               RINCON DE LA VIEJA

Dating back to approximately 600,000 years, the Rincon De La Vieja Volcano is a very complex geological structure, consisting of at least nine volcanic cones. The most active crater is 1806 meters high. Its sides are nearly vertical and are barren of any vegetation. The Santa Maria crater is the highest point, it stands at 1916 meters. It's presently inactive, but it has vegetative cover.

Along the southern side of the Rincon De La Vieja Volcano are pools of hot springs, mud pots, & steam & sulphur vents that can be visited. Throughout this present century occasional eruptions of gases, ash and mud mixed with steam were noted. An especially active volcanic period started in 1966-1970's.

During 1983-1984, the volcanic activity affected an area of 2 km to the south and to the east of Rincon's active crater. Most recent eruptions, in 1991, 1995 and again in 1997--have caused some minor damage to a few of the settlements located on the Atlantic slope.

The mighty Rincon De La Vieja stands astride the continental division, separating the Atlantic from the Pacific watersheds, in the northwest zone of the country. Rincon de la Vieja's height & location-- make it a real "water factory", one which has been lending service for many years to the province.

CC Vacation Services will be happy to schedule a visit to Rincon de la Vieja Volcano, and its dormant sister cone, Santa Maria, as well as the older dormant-- Cerro Von Seebach. The thermal mud pools, waterfall swimming areas and freshwater lakes are also available for visitors to use. A well marked trail system through Rincon de la Vieja National Park leads visitors to the Park's attractions and between the sector stations.

It is said that Rincon De La Vieja once served as a natural lighthouse for sailors off the Pacific   coast of Costa Rica. Reports from 1851, tell of eruptions of smoke and ash; sporadic eruptions of steam and ash were again observed between 1860 and 1863. For a remarkable tour of this area, just give us a phone call or contact us by email to discuss the many ways we can assist.
